Facebook is a good way to drive traffic to your blog, especially when you’re getting started. Due to changes to Facebook mini-feed algorithms and other factors, Facebook isn’t my favorite way to push traffic. However, having a presence on Facebook continues to remain important and you can still drive traffic using it.
Set Up a Facebook Page
A Facebook page is one of the best ways to use Facebook to drive lots traffic to your blog. You can post articles and photos to your Facebook page, invite your Facebook friends and others to follow your page, and drive traffic from the page to your blog. My favorite feature is when posting something on Instagram, you can simultaneously cross-post it to your Facebook page (as well as your Twitter and Tumblr pages), thus driving additional traffic with no extra work.

Instagram is probably the best way to build brand awareness and start driving traffic to your site. I consider Instagram one of my favorite, if not my favorite social media platform. You might want to consider setting up a new Instagram account in the name of your blog rather than using your personal account. For example, you can keep your current account and then make a dedicated one just to promote your blog.

Pinterest is a hugely untapped source of traffic for your blog. While time-consuming upfront, driving traffic via Pinterest is something that can be automated and serve as a massive amount of traffic to your site.
The best way to use Pinterest to drive traffic to your blog is by using BoardBooster. BoardBooster is a tool that automates the process of joining group boards and pinning your pins to those boards. My strategy was initially to try and gain as many followers as I could on my Pinterest account, but what I realized is that each group board can have many thousand followers, and by getting invitations to those group boards you can increase your reach exponentially without having to increase your personal following.
There are many successful bloggers who use Pinterest to drive thousands, and even hundreds of thousands, of monthly page views. I’ve been able to join several group boards and create pins that I share on those boards to drive traffic to my site. Check out the below video for a tutorial on joining group boards:
Improve Your User Experience
Due to the size and popularity of the WordPress community, there are thousands of WordPress plugins available and millions of live WordPress websites online. Using the right WordPress plugins will enhance your visitors’ user experience and lead to more traffic. For those of you who aren’t familiar, a plugin is a tool to help improve your website. For example, if you want an easy way to sort your website posts by date, you can download a plugin for that.
If WordPress were your iPhone, plug-ins would be the apps. Given the vast number of people with WordPress sites, an enormous community has been built to help cater to these WordPress users. As your website grows, you will also find it easier to outsource tasks to those familiar with WordPress over the other website builders. Some popular plug-ins that I recommend include Akismet, which weeds out spammers and unwanted junk comments, and BackWPup, which will back up your website automatically so your blog stays safe!

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is one of the best ways to drive traffic to your blog. This refers to optimizing your posts so that Google and other search engines have an easier time finding your content and displaying it higher up in their search results. There are many ways to improve your SEO skills, and my first recommendation is to install and learn the Yoast SEO Plugin for WordPress.
Install the Yoast SEO Plugin
Below is a screenshot from the Yoast WordPress plugin, an extremely helpful plugin available to WordPress users that allows me to generate traffic from Google to my website. Yoast is very user-friendly and easy to learn. It allows you to enhance your posts for SEO purposes so they rank higher in Google searches, allowing you to generate more traffic to your site and make more money.
Under the analysis header, you will see a variety of tests that the Yoast plugin runs to make sure your post is SEO optimized. In this example, I am showing you the Yoast results for my post comparing SquareSpace and WordPress for new bloggers. I have set the article’s keyword (this is the Google search term I want my post to show up for in Google results), and Yoast runs a series of tests to make sure my post is optimized for that term and will succeed when people search for that term. This includes making sure I use the focus keyword in my post’s title, article description, and even image descriptions.
SEO is something you will learn over time. My best recommendation is to start with the Yoast plugin as a great foundation for you.
Start an Email List
Building an e-mail list is an important source of traffic for your blog because this is the one source you will have total control over. Given the changes we’ve seen in social media algorithms and even with people moving to different social media platforms all the time, building an engaged email list is a fantastic way for you to generate more traffic while retaining full control. I personally use Convertkit for my email list and would highly recommend it to you as well.
YouTube is a rapidly growing platform with highly engaged users that you can leverage to drive more traffic to your blog. It also can increase your engagement with your followers because they can see and hear your voice, driving further connection to who you are. Creating video content can also be fun and easier than writing out blog posts, which can be more time-consuming. You can record a great video in only minutes, and instantly share it with your followers.
Collaborating with peers is a fantastic way to drive traffic to your blog fast. Collaborating via social media shout-outs, article guest posts and other joint efforts with fellow bloggers can allow you to leverage each other’s audiences and find synergies. If you are just starting out, my best recommendation is to add value first to them and ask for things in exchange later. For example, write a blog post on your top 10 favorite bloggers who inspired you and add a link to each one’s website. Or offer to give someone a guest shout out on your Instagram account or Facebook page. By building goodwill up front, you develop strong relationships which you can then reap the benefits of later on.
