Best Cocktail Bars NYC

I’ve been living in New York City for four years now and I love exploring the bars and speakeasies in Manhattan and the outer boroughs! I love getting new recommendations, especially for places that are either hidden, have great drinks and/or are off the beaten path.

Since there are more than 2,000 bars in NYC, this was not an easy list to put together. But here are my NYC top picks!

Fig. 19

131 1/2 Chrystie St | Lower East Side

Located in the back of an art gallery, Fig. 19 makes for a great date spot or group hang out. I wound up there with a group of friends after a birthday dinner and was impressed with the cocktail options and unique location behind an art gallery.

Just keep an eye out if you’ve never been before since the door is camouflaged. We liked all the drinks at this Lower East Side spot, but especially enjoyed the Vanishing Point with egg white and cinnamon.

Apothéke

9 Doyers St | Bw Division St & St James Pl | Chinatown

Located in Chinatown, Apothéke is a truly unique bar that belongs on the best cocktails in NYC list. Make sure to review their entire cocktail menu, as the options and ingredients are diverse and interesting. While the drinks themselves are delicious and well done, the mixologists there also take presentation seriously. Although pricey, the quality makes it worth checking out.

Blacktail

22 Battery Place | 2nd Floor | Battery Park

Blacktail is a Cuban Prohibition-era themed bar that opened in August 2016 in Battery Park. We were given a complimentary amuse-bouche taste of a daiquiri to start, and then from there enjoyed well-made cocktails. Their menu offers a nice variety, and we highly recommend their take on the Rum and Cola, which included champagne and cola syrup.

Dear Irving

15 East 7th Street | East Village

Dear Irving is a great spot to find a wide range of exceptional drinks! But what stands out here is the high ceilings, vintage décor and elegant furniture. Dear Irving is a great place to relax and chat with friends on a comfy couch as your server brings you delicious and unique cocktails. Walk-ins and reservations are both welcome, although I would recommend reserving a spot ahead of time if you know when you’ll be going.

Raines Law Room

48 W 17th St | Between 5th & 6th Aves | Union Square
The William | 24 E 39th Street | Midtown East

Raines Law Room is a classic New York City speakeasy. For the original Union Square location, enter through a mysterious hidden entrance, and you will see a candle-lit bar with sophisticated, stylish furniture perfectly set for a great night. However, the bar doesn’t serve much food, so if you’re hungry, make sure to grab a bite before. Be sure to also check out their second location, located in The William hotel near Grand Central in Midtown.

Dutch Kills

27-24 Jackson Ave | Long Island City

If you’re interested in getting out of Manhattan and are on a hunt for great cocktails, look no further. Located in Long Island City and labeled with a mere “Bar” sign out front, Dutch Kills offers an attentive staff and unique drinks. For those coming from Midtown or anywhere off the E train, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can get there.

Le Boudoir

135 Atlantic Ave | Between Clinton St & Henry St | Brooklyn Heights

Hidden inside another bar, located in Brooklyn, and Mary-Antoinette-inspired. What else could you ask for?! This speakeasy is filled with old French furniture and the entrance is mysteriously concealed, with a staircase that leads you downstairs to the main area of the bar. Known for its creative cocktails, Le Boudoir also offers attentive wait staff and a fun ambiance. Be sure to check it out!
