Located on the 52nd floor of the Park Hyatt Tokyo, New York Bar offers delicious cocktails and an impressive view of the Japan’s capital city skyline. The drinks aren’t cheap at ¥1,800 apiece ($17 US), but it’s worth having at least one while you enjoy the view and some live music.

Star Bar

1-5-13 Ginza | Chuo

Many say that Hisashi Kishi is to drinks what famous chef Jiro Ono is to sushi. Opening in 2000 and perennially featured on the Top 50 Bars in the World list, Star Bar’s hand-crafted cocktails make this spot one of the best bars in Tokyo. You can go for the classics like their Old Fashioned or spice it up and ask for something with Japanese Pear or grape.

Tip: Most restaurants and bars are closed on Sundays in Tokyo, but Star Bar is open on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. if you’re looking for somewhere open

Golden Gai – Tetsuya Sakaguchi

Golden Gai | Shinjuku

Golden Gai is an area of Shinjuku made up of six small alleys and is known for its festive architecture and fun nightlife. During my stay I met a local who brought us to this place:

The bartender was awesome and kept ringing this bell and jumping up into the attic to grab new drinks since the bar itself was so small. For most of our time there, it was just me, Sawako (my new Japanese friend), the owner and his girlfriend. Sawako was translating from Japanese and we were taking pictures, shots and having a blast!

Bar High Five

7-2-14 Ginza| 26 Polestar Building 4F | Ginza | Chuo-ku

Legendary bartender Hidetsugu Ueno spun out of Star Bar to open his own spot in the Ginza neighborhood of Tokyo, making Bar High Five one of the best bars in Tokyo. Using delicious blends of various spirits and “ice-diamond” hand-carving of the cubes to chill his drinks, Ueno offers no menu. He will instead ask you what kind of drink you’d like and he’ll do the rest. Be sure to try his famous blend of Japanese whiskey and green tea liqueur, or go for a cherry blossom cocktail with Gin!
